Cook Time

The cook time for this recipe is around 20 minutes. You'll need to fry the falafel balls until they're crispy and golden brown, and then assemble the dish with the rice and toppings.

Ingredients

For the falafel:
  • 1 cup dried chickpeas
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp coriander
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 3-4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Oil for frying
For the rice:
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
For the toppings:
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Chopped cucumbers
  • Chopped red onions
  • Tahini sauce

Equipment

  • Food processor or blender
  • Frying pan or deep fryer
  • Saucepan with lid

Method

1. Rinse the chickpeas and soak them in water overnight. 2. Drain the chickpeas and add them to a food processor or blender. 3. Add the onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, salt, black pepper, and baking powder to the food processor or blender. 4. Pulse the mixture until it's well combined, but still slightly chunky. 5. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and add the flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it's thick enough to form into balls. 6. Heat the oil in a frying pan or deep fryer. 7. Form the falafel mixture into small balls and fry them in the hot oil until they're crispy and golden brown. Drain them on a paper towel to remove any excess oil. 8. While the falafel is frying, rinse the rice and add it to a saucepan with the water and salt. 9. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pan with a lid. 10. Simmer the rice for around 18-20 minutes, or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is fluffy. 11. To assemble the dish, place a scoop of rice on a plate, and top it with a few falafel balls and some chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions. 12. Drizzle some tahini sauce over the top, and serve hot.

Notes

You can use canned chickpeas instead of dried, but the falafel balls won't be as crispy. If you don't have fresh herbs, you can use dried herbs instead, but the falafel won't be as flavorful. You can make the falafel mixture ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 2 days.

You can add some spices or herbs to the rice while it's cooking to give it extra flavor. If you don't have tahini sauce, you can use hummus or tzatziki instead. You can also serve this dish with some pita bread on the side for a complete meal.
