Ingredients

  • 1 cup of rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tbsp urad dal
  • 1 tbsp chana dal
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Equipment

  • Pressure Cooker
  • Frying Pan
  • Chopping board
  • Knife
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for 15 minutes.
  2. Drain the water and keep the rice aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add mustard seeds, urad dal, and chana dal.
  4. When the mustard seeds start to splutter and the dals turn golden brown, add chopped onions, green chilies, and curry leaves.
  5. Saute for a few minutes until the onions turn translucent.
  6. Add the chopped tomatoes and ginger and saute for a few minutes.
  7. Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste.
  8. Bring the water to a boil and then add the soaked rice.
  9. Close the pressure cooker lid and cook for 2 whistles.
  10. Let the pressure release naturally and then open the lid.
  11. Fluff up the rice with a fork and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can add vegetables of your choice like carrot, peas, capsicum, etc.
  • If you do not have a pressure cooker, you can cook the rice in a pot with a lid.
  • Be careful while adding water as the amount may vary depending on the quality of rice.
  • You can also add grated coconut for a more authentic taste.
