Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow lentils (toor dal)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 large tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1. Clean and wash the lentils and soak them in water for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds. Let it crackle.
  3. Add chopped onions and green chilies. Saute until onions turn golden brown.
  4. Add ginger garlic paste and saute for a few seconds.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and saute until they turn mushy.
  6. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala powder. Mix well.
  7. Add soaked lentils and water. Mix well.
  8. Cover the pressure cooker with a lid and cook for 3-4 whistles or until the lentils are soft and cooked.
  9. Let the pressure release naturally and then open the lid.
  10. Mash the lentils with a spoon or a masher to make them smooth.
  11. Add salt to taste and mix well.
  12. For jeera rice, wash and soak 1 cup of rice for 20 minutes. Drain the water and keep aside.
  13. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan.
  14. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.
  15. Add the soaked rice and saute for 2-3 minutes.
  16. Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste. Mix well.
  17. Cover the pan with a lid and cook the rice until it is fully cooked.
  18. Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork.
  19. Serve the dal and rice hot with some chopped coriander leaves and lemon wedges.

Notes

  • You can add more water to the dal if you like it to be more soupy.
  • If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can cook the lentils in a pot with a lid until they are soft.
  • You can adjust the spices according to your taste.
