- 1 cup yellow lentils (toor dal)
- 2 cups water
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 large tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
- 2 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
- Salt to taste

Method
- Clean and wash the lentils and soak them in water for 15-20 minutes.
- Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds. Let it crackle.
- Add chopped onions and green chilies. Saute until onions turn golden brown.
- Add ginger garlic paste and saute for a few seconds.
- Add chopped tomatoes and saute until they turn mushy.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala powder. Mix well.
- Add soaked lentils and water. Mix well.
- Cover the pressure cooker with a lid and cook for 3-4 whistles or until the lentils are soft and cooked.
- Let the pressure release naturally and then open the lid.
- Mash the lentils with a spoon or a masher to make them smooth.
- Add salt to taste and mix well.
- For jeera rice, wash and soak 1 cup of rice for 20 minutes. Drain the water and keep aside.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan.
- Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.
- Add the soaked rice and saute for 2-3 minutes.
- Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste. Mix well.
- Cover the pan with a lid and cook the rice until it is fully cooked.
- Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork.
- Serve the dal and rice hot with some chopped coriander leaves and lemon wedges.
Notes
- You can add more water to the dal if you like it to be more soupy.
- If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can cook the lentils in a pot with a lid until they are soft.
- You can adjust the spices according to your taste.
