For the jeera rice, you will need:- 1 cup basmati rice
- 1 tablespoon oil

- 2 cups water
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup split yellow lentils (moong dal)
- 4 cups water
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Cilantro for garnish

To make the jeera rice:- Wash the rice in cold water until the water runs clear.
- Heat the oil in a pressure cooker or pot and add the cumin seeds.
- When the cumin seeds start to splutter, add the rice and stir well.
- Add water and salt to taste.
- Cover the pressure cooker or pot with a lid and cook for two whistles on high heat or until the rice is cooked.
- Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and keep it aside.
- Wash the lentils in cold water until the water runs clear and soak them for 20 minutes.
- Heat the oil in a pressure cooker or pot and add the cumin seeds.
- Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
- Add the ginger-garlic paste and stir well.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala and stir well.
- Add the soaked lentils, water, and salt to taste.
- Cover the pressure cooker or pot with a lid and cook for three whistles on high heat or until the lentils are cooked.
- Once the lentils are cooked, mash them lightly with a spoon and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Garnish with cilantro and serve hot with jeera rice.
