Equipment

For this recipe, you will need a pressure cooker or a pot with a lid to cook the lentils and rice.

Method

To make the jeera rice:
  1. Wash the rice in cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Heat the oil in a pressure cooker or pot and add the cumin seeds.
  3. When the cumin seeds start to splutter, add the rice and stir well.
  4. Add water and salt to taste.
  5. Cover the pressure cooker or pot with a lid and cook for two whistles on high heat or until the rice is cooked.
  6. Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and keep it aside.
To make the dal fry:
  1. Wash the lentils in cold water until the water runs clear and soak them for 20 minutes.
  2. Heat the oil in a pressure cooker or pot and add the cumin seeds.
  3. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  4. Add the ginger-garlic paste and stir well.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  6. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala and stir well.
  7. Add the soaked lentils, water, and salt to taste.
  8. Cover the pressure cooker or pot with a lid and cook for three whistles on high heat or until the lentils are cooked.
  9. Once the lentils are cooked, mash them lightly with a spoon and cook for another 5 minutes.
  10. Garnish with cilantro and serve hot with jeera rice.

Notes

You can adjust the spice levels according to your taste. If you prefer a spicier dish, add more red chili powder.
